Pest Management 101: What Makes Your Home Attractive To Pests?

While homeowners are busy beautifying their homes inside and out to impress guests and the entire neighbourhood, they may be unaware that they are also making their house a perfect home for uninvited guests– the pests. Homeowners may need pest control services in Singapore to get rid of critters.

No one wants uninvited critters prancing in all of their glory around the house, yet for some reason, they still gatecrash our properties. But why do these pests love our home? Why does cleaning the house seem ineffective in keeping them at bay?

The first step inpest management is to ensure your home is unattractive to crawlers.

What Makes Your Home Attractive To Pests?

The problem with sharing a roof with pests is they bring discomfort, mess, and diseases to your family. Rats and rodents gnaw your food stock open and scatter your garbage everywhere. Mosquitoes bite your legs under the table whilst eating dinner. Cockroaches carry diseases such as salmonella, cholera, and typhoid fever in your home.

The most important thing to remember is that pests reside in your home if they find your house a perfect environment to thrive in. Do not let them flourish by not calling pest control in Singapore.

Here are the things at home that attract bugs and pests:

1. Food

Neatly packed food stocks or spilt food, any food attracts pests. Pests are not picky eaters; they can feast on your leftovers and crumbs.

●    Pantry

Let us start with your pantry, a place with bountiful food supplies. Pests tend to live near their food source, so it is a no-brainer if rats, rodents, cockroaches, and ants visit your kitchen or panty each night.

Firstly, make sure all your food stocks in the pantry are sealed. If you have opened a canned good or milk carton, keep them refrigerated as per storing instructions. You can also transfer the content to an airtight sealed container before putting them back in the pantry.

Check your food stocks in the pantry regularly as pests can gnaw open plastic packages. You may also see mouse droppings in your pantry. Can call your pest control company in Singapore if you see these signs.

●    Countertops

We love to put fruits on our dining table or countertops, but these fruits attract fruit flies. Eat ripe fruits immediately to avoid fruit flies invasion. Remove all peelings or rotten fruits from your fruit basket.

Instead of placing them on your countertop, you have the option to keep them in the fridge.

Besides fruits, dirty dishes on your kitchen sink and counter also attract pests. Wash your dishes immediately after eating.

●    Compost

Compost is where we put fruit peelings, leftovers, meat and fish entrails, and other organic wastes from the kitchen. They may contain garden debris, such as dried leaves and twigs. It is also a feast for rodents, cockroaches, and flies.

Make sure to put your compost bin outdoors, several feet away from your home. Besides sealing the plastic tightly, ensure your compost bin has a lid closed securely.

You can call a pest control company in Singapore if the pests are unmanageable.

2. Moisture and stagnant water

Most pests, such as cockroaches, silverfish, and termites, thrive in humid places, whilst mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Pest control in Singapore always targets your kitchen, basement, garden, and other humid areas.

Homeowners need to remove any stagnant water or water sources that cause moisture.

●    Stagnant water

Clogged gutters, bird baths, potted plants, and air conditioning units accumulate water.

Firstly, regularly check and clear out blockage on your gutters. If you have open drains, ensure no blockage causes water to pool. Your aircon unit accumulates water, as well. Drain the water regularly.

Secondly, always change the water of your birth baths, outdoor and indoor fountains, and ponds.

Lastly, potted plants and uneven spots in your yard accumulate puddles. People can contract leptospirosis, a bacterial disease from rat urine, by stepping on puddles with urine.

●    Leaks

Leaks in the basement, bathroom, and garage increase moisture in the air. Cockroaches, snakes, and centipedes love these kinds of environments. Fixing all the leaks in your house and keeping the area dry will keep pests away.

Call yourpest control services in Singapore on the first signs of infestation.

3. Trash and clutter

Trash-and-clutter

Rodents, snakes, and cockroaches love the clutter in your basement, such as old clothing and stacks of newspapers.

As much as possible, don’t accumulate clutter in your house; it will only attract pests. If inevitable, put all your stuff in a container or box with a lid. You can also cover them with plastics. Never leave food in the boxes, old chests, and drawers.

Clean your basement and garage occasionally and keep the area dry.

Always take your trash out of your house. Seal them in a plastic bag before placing them in a bin with a lid. Place the bin several feet away from your home. Ensure rats, feral dogs and cats can’t open the cover or topple down the bin.

Remember, pest management starts by keeping your home clean.

4. Gaps, cracks, crevices, and holes

Cockroaches, termites, rats, ants, silverfish, and other tiny critters squeeze themselves in cracks, gaps, and crevices where they take shelter. Cracks and crevices are unreachable, dark, barely disturbed, and hidden from plain sight.

The holes, cracks, and gaps are an entryway for the pests into your home.

Spray insecticide in the cracks and crevices to get rid of cockroaches. Cover the holes in your window and door screens to prevent flies, mosquitoes, and rats from entering your home.

Call yourpest control company in Singapore if you see signs of infestation.

Conclusion

Does your home possess any of these pest-attractive traits? If yes, you better start making your home unattractive. Otherwise, expect to see your guests shrieking at the sight of cockroaches or rats, sashaying and playing around your home.
