Tips for Making Kitchen Equipment Upgrades

So, you’ve set some cash aside to spruce up the kitchen? But, now that the moment has come, you’ve realised that going about it isn’t so straightforward. There are many options and factors to consider.

How Old is Your Kitchen?

Your appliances might be repairable. But if they are very old, it’s all futile. You might get a few more years out of your old broiler or oven, but if they are flanked by newer appliances with modern features, it’s best to replace them before they start causing problems.

Maintenance

Simply purchasing new appliances isn’t enough. Always keep an eye on your equipment. Check it regularly, even if it is brand new. By keeping it clean, you’ll be keeping it in good condition. Make sure the wiring is safe. Regularly check for rust and clogs.

Safety

Make sure your equipment only uses short cords. Avoid extension cords. Always plug them in the nearest outlet. Take note of the manufacturers’ warnings.

You can buy a junction box that has built-in ground fault interrupters (GFI). The feature allows you to plug in extra cords. But, more importantly, it’s a precaution against electrical/water shock accidents.

When you install something new in the kitchen, always make sure the appliance isn’t blocking any vents or heaters. In case you haven’t got one already, buy a fire extinguisher for your kitchen.

Even though your products might be brand new, that doesn’t mean something can’t go wrong. Some things are out of your control.

Make sure you know how to use the extinguisher. Reading the directions only after the fire has broken out won’t do you any good.

Clean up spills as soon as the oven cools. Use the range hood to vent steam and smoke. Wash it regularly and remove the filters. Beware of grease build-up as it can catch fire.

Avoid buying used products. With new appliances, you can rest assured that they’ve been tested. Get rid of any expired tools.

When your utensils and appliances, be they heavy or light, start to melt, chip, and breakdown chemically, or when cracks and rust appear, it’s time to get new ones. Such products pose a health hazard as the debris can end up in your food.

Energy Efficiency

The kitchen is a good place to start saving energy. It uses all of your utilities, electricity, plumbing, and gas. By choosing Energy Star-rated products, you can save a ton of money while reducing the impact on the environment.

You may find an Energy Star fridge that comes with rebates and tax exemptions. Such a fridge also maximizes food freshness. It would also be good to get an Energy Star qualified dishwasher.

Purchasing such a dishwasher might make you eligible for a rebate, depending on where you live. You should also consider LED lighting and low-flow faucets.

However, the one feature many people neglect in the kitchen, ductwork, is one of the most important when it comes to energy efficiency. Having proper ductwork is vital.

Faulty or old ductwork can lose 30 per cent or more of the conditioner air. If you ensure your ductwork is properly configured, it can be 50% more energy efficient.

On top of that, it will regulate the temperature properly, something that is of the essence in every kitchen. The ductwork cleans the air of smoke, fumes, odour, oil and grease. Ductwork is essential to a healthy cooking environment.

The problem with ducts is that they are simple on the surface, and complex underneath it. It’s best to hire some HVAC professionals to help you out.

Remodeling

If you’re planning on renovating your kitchen, it important to think about your appliances on time. It’s best to pick out the equipment before you start tearing down the kitchen walls.

That especially goes for built-in appliances. For instance, it would be best to have your range/cooktop ready on site so that your contractor will have an easier job doing the countertop templating.

Build-in equipment is a bit pricey, but it’s an excellent choice if you don’t plan on moving anything soon. If you’re going for a remodel, just keep in mind that tailoring your kitchen to your equipment is easier than the other way around.

Conclusion

The kitchen is the heart of every home. Make sure you take good care of it. By making sure your kitchen is well-equipped, you’re buying yourself peace of mind.
